Do you have a single person motivated team?

Has anyone else noticed how you can have a so called team of film-makers (i.e. Anarchy Pictures) buuuut there is really only one person that is motivated to actually getting stuff done, the others just tag along.

I don't know. It seems that in my team (and also other people I have asked on here) that there is one real keen enthusiast and all the others tag along and dont seem to sho as much enthusiasm.

Just a question. Answer me that.

Some are always going to lead, some are going to be led. I found that even those who need a kick in the pips are capable of great things with the right kind of motivation. Example - filming on a cold winter's day, my usually very dour DP managed to be persuaded to get his shoes off, roll up his trousers and get into a freezing river (we checked for nasty undercurrent first!). Result? Great drowing POV shot. Regretably we had to cut it but it was some of his best work all day. He's usually full of negativity and "no, we'll never be able to do that" but I know what he's capable of. You do need the hangers-on though - there's always going to be something you've left in the car which they can trot off and get for you. Just try and make them feel like they're doing something useful and they may surprise you. Or tell them to bugger off. Either way, it's more useful than worrying about who's hanging around on your shoulder all the time.

I'm lucky in that respect. We at Spare Time Films have a core group of 5 people, and we all do our bit. We have weekly meeting to decide who will do what to help make the movie each week, and everyone goes away and does what they're asked.

I'm not the "leader" of the group in the conventional sense, as we see ourselves as more of a co-operative, but I am the founder member and I do take on the responsibilty of making sure anything is organised and completed on time.

Many tag along for percieved glamour, *not* because they are filmmakers.

Everyone wants to be a director, but no one's interested in being a location manager...

That's why it's a piece of piss to make a film if you have a reasonable budget - you don't have to rely on people's good will, you rely on the fact that they want to feed their families.

Of course, making low-budget stuff helps sort the wheat from the chaff and those that proove themselves time and time again become core and no doubt move on to bigger and better things (unless they start making cheap TV of course ;-)

I found the same thing when I have joined film-making teams - that, when I get there, I'm the only motivated person.

Maybe there are enough single motivated people in the UK to form an amazing company, and produce a film which totally surprises the industry, and shows what quality can look like.

And we're all spread out over hundreds of miles anyway.

That's just what I've been thinking over the past few weeks. Wouldn't it be great? A whole team of ENTHUSIASTS all willing to chip in because of the love of it, not the precieved glamour.

MAYBE, we should set up something on the net, to make the best low budget film out with makers throughout the country?

Although, being an employer myself, there is always a difference between what people say and what they do (unless, of course, you're lucky).

All our egos in one room at one time concentrating on one thing??!! A very idealistic way at looking at things I think.

Things by Commitee never work full stop, you could get the most enthusiastic people in the world and stick them in a room and it still wouldnt work, ever seen 12 actors in a room left alone with a kettle ?

Teams have to have a Team leader, If the team ends up being one person doing all the work then the only fault of that is the person leading the team for choosing the wrong people, also enthusiasm goes only so far you need skills, commitment, time, dedication etc etc and if you want it to be a succesful team all the team members must have that

Deadwood can sink a ship faster than anything, if they are jsut along for the ride kick them off , also if the product isnt there your not going to go far either

Also organisation is the key, if you dont have strong organisation and strong leadership, otherwise they fall apart

easy to talk the talk and have ideas but turning that to the walk and actually doing somethign is a total different ball game
